Conflict Management Thoughts for Project Managers

Conflicts on a project team are inevitable.  A Project Manager should not ignore conflicts or be afraid to engage in conflict resolution. Instead, the Project Manager should quickly identify the root cause of the conflict and actively address the core issues. Common sources of conflict include conflicting goals, personality conflicts, scarce resources, organizational bureaucracy and different core values. It is only after identifying the root cause, can the Project Manager deploy the appropriate strategy for resolving the conflict.  Those strategies include accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, competing or compromising. Finally, never take conflict personally.
